Are washing machines like cars?

I ask this because I own an Italian washing machine. I’m starting to wonder if this was a bad idea – it’s called Candy Alisé which sounds like a porn star name. It’s also a washer/dryer, which I also had a bad experience with before – no matter how hard you try the damn things never dry your clothes properly!

So anyway, in true Italian style it’s been running fine until two weeks ago when it failed catastrophically.

We had suspected that it had been not drying the clothes properly for weeks.  So we ran through all the steps and checked that we were using the right program and left it running…

Suddenly our flat was filled with the horrible smell of burning plastic – so we rushed towards the kitchen and smoke was pouring out of it!

So we arranged for the repairman to come over and when he looked inside, you could see that the machine had short circuited.  The repairman blamed a short circuit – He removed a fuse and it had been burnt through!

Amazing isn’t it?

During the F1 race on Sunday (which is always when this s*** happens) I started to smell a weird plasticky smell. I feared the worst, so I had a quick look around the flat and noticed smoke pouring from the kitchen. So I ran in and lo and behold it was the washing machine! It looked a lot like Kimi Raikkonen’s KERS failure in Malaysia actually 😉  But this time the smoke was thicker and much more acrid (the kitchen still stinks) and the best part – the shop doesn’t want to exchange it under warranty until it breaks three times, even though it’s now a fire risk!

If washing machines are like cars then mine is definitely a Ferrari – Really good for ages then suddenly they turn utterly useless – looks pretty but has lots of hidden costs and works when it wants to 😉

I had a washer/dryer before and they’re a lot of Piquet, so never again 😦

Next time I’m buying a German one – hoping for Vorsprung Durch Teknik with that one 😀

About rubbergoat

Hi there! I’m a mad keen F1 fan who has been addicted to the sport for 20 years. I watch every race and follow the sport in every way I can. I have a keen interest in numbers and I would like to analyse the races from a statistical point of view to see if the data shows something we can't see on TV. As always, I’d love to hear what you think and especially if we can discuss my analyses that would be great – but please no nasty stuff!

Yup, it’s a Ferrari. Just wait until it has a pit stop!
